    Wednesday Aug 28 1861

     Left the resident of my family at Auburn Fayette Co Iowa for the purpose of enlisting in the regiment then being formed by the Hon Wm Vandever at Dubuque. Reached the village of Fayette where we remained over night and thence the next day to Independence County, seat of Buchanon Co.
