    Friday Sept 6

Nothing especial today to record, papers contradict the death of Jeff Davis. Our camp is located 2 miles from Dubuque in a pleasant grove high enough to be above the sickly influence of the Mississippi. Here away from the busy scenes of city and home life, with the father of waters on the one hand, bluffs of everlasting rock on the other, we can hold communion with the God of nature and the father of our spirits and the better prepare ourselves for enduring the privations and hardships of a soldier's life.

Oh Father of all grace, give me strength that I may endure as seeing him who is invisible. That even amid the thunderings and loud swelling notes of war my hope may be staid on thee.
