March 12th 1862
Benton Co, Ark. Camp 21st
For my own future convenience, this memorandum is kept, hoping to have nothing to record that does not give victory and success to the cause of the grand old union. We are still in camp at the will of our commanding officers. What queer things soldiers are. We move like a machine just when others will it.
Lient. Neff has died of his wound. He was a kind officer and friendly adviser. Peace to his ashes.
