    Wed 9th, Camp 26

    Left Galena, county seat of Stone Co. at 12 [M.] Crossed James river on a bridge of wagons. Boys noisy. Too much Strychnine Whiskey. Camped 2 miles from Galena on Bear Creek. Order read in the evening from Gen. Halleck announcing the taking of Island No 10 with 6000 prisoners, 3 general 100 siege guns etc. etc. etc.
