Sund 18, Camp 48
A messenger from Osterham brought in word this morning that the enemy were preparing to receive us at Little Red River at 2 1/2 PM. Orders came to strike tents and move forward. Marched 12 miles, weather pleasant, roads good, country more settled, plenty negros. Some corn but no cotton planted. Surface mountains with sandstone cropping out. Passed a family in which there was a young lady who hurrahed for the union and Lincoln. The old men exclaimed thank God it came our turn now. Each company in turn gave them three cheers.
