    A heavy shower fell today. Commission of DA Carpenter promoted to Major from Capt read on dress parade. How elastic some people's consciences are. This man and Major Coyle have secured their own promotion by treachery. A meeting of regimental officers having been called at the request of Maj. Coyle exercising (sic) the rights of free men chose Capt. J.W. Towner to fill the vacancy of Ident-Col. Before the proper proceedings could be recorded to Gov. Kirkwood. Maj. Coyle using the benefits of a leave of absence reports himself to the Gov. and secures his and Capt. Carpenter's promotion.
